Robert Altman
1925-2006

Robert Altman died last night in Los Angeles.
My favorites of his many films:
The Long Goodbye
(1973), which is the best work Elliot Gould has
ever done, followed closely by
Nashville
(1975)
and
The Player
(1992). I'm also partial to
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
because
who can resist Julie Christie? I've yet to see
A Prairie Home Companion
(2006), and there are several of his more
obscure works I've never seen. I
have
seen, without knowing it at the time, all of the
Bonanza episodes he directed in
the early 60's, and probably most of the Vic
Morrow-Rick Jason series
Combat
episodes. The one to forget, as if anyone who
saw it could, is
Popeye
(1980), a massive train wreck of a film despite
it's near perfect cast.
